First Page of a Chapter

This page illustrates manuscript form for the first page of a chapter in a book manuscript. All chapters should begin on a new page.

These manuscript sample pages are based on typewritten manuscripts, but they should serve as guide to settings in a word processor that will produce acceptable hard copy. Most of this formatting is not appropriate for files for electronic submissions.

The margins have been cut off so the page will be viewable on most text browsers. The inch measurements are from the left edge of the paper. In the scale, the | represents a margin setting and a ^ represents a tab. Comments and line numbers in braces, {}, do not appear in the manuscript.

{06} is especially good for story collections or nonfiction works
{07} that may be rearranged before publication. If the manuscript
{08} goes to the typesetters, the pages are numbered in the upper
{09}   right with a special stamping machine.}

{25}
{26} Chapter format is rather like the first page of a short
{27}
{28} story. Chapters always begin on a new page. The chapter
{29}
{30} title or just the number goes a third of the way down the
{31}
{32} page. Of course you do not use a byline with the chapters
{33}
{34} of your novel unless part of the fiction is that the parts
{35}
{36} are written by various characters. In the manuscript, the
{37}
{38} first pages of chapters are numbered although in some
{39}
{40} finished works the page numbers do not appear on the first
{41}
{42} page of a chapter ("blind folio") or the page number is put
{43}
{44} at the bottom ("drop folio").
{45}
{46} Don't confuse the slug line in the upper left with the
{47}
{48} running heads that may appear in the finished work. The
{49}
{50} book designer will specify these if they are part of the
{51}
{52} design. Likewise, make it easy for the book designer to
{52}
{54} specify the style of the chapter titles by putting them in
{55}
{56} the same font you use for the body text. Don't put titles
{57}
{58} in boldface or larger sizes. Simply use initial capitals
{59}
{60} for the first, last, and important words. The book designer
