The (Used to be) Main Blog

This is the Legacy Home Page

And there is nothing wrong with that. But this page and its children have not been updated since March, 2010, and the will never be updated again. Some texts here are in pretty good condtions. But many links, information about stores, events, and living persons, will deteriorate rapidly.

The part of this site under current development is HERE. Not everything that can be moved has been moved to the current site yet, so you may still have a use for this legacy page.

Spring Cleaning

18 March 2010

It's spring cleaning time at Lars Eighner's Home Page, so things will be a little flaky until and unless the new system is in place.

PHP and Lynxcgi

31 March 2010

The problem here is to make a PHP script work with lynxcgi as well as it does when it is served by an http server.

Lynxcgi is a dummy protocol which Lynx, the one true browser, can use to run CGI scripts by pretending to be a server. Read the whole entry.

Obama is Bush’s Third Term

24 March 2010

Obama morphs into Bush
George W. Obama

Sure, the sound of Republicans bitching and moaning is sweet, and their nutcase threats and insults, the bricks through the windows, and the silly lawsuits over Constitutional points settled long ago can only doom their efforts to create a little daylight be them and the raving Teabaggers. Delightful!

But the truth is, there is nothing in the new health care law to be celebrated. As has been pointed out, it is not too far from past Republican proposals, and it would have closer if Republican racism had not focused the party on defeating an Obama measure at any cost. In the end they did not break Obama, and they did not get their input considered in the outcome. But they still got a very Republican bill.

The health care law ensures profits for greed-based insurance corportations by ensuring the captive customers. This is not reform. This ensures that a real health care reform will not happen for generations, if ever. Mussolini had a word for government that allies itself with corporations instead of with the people.

This fairly completes Obama's transformation into Bush's third term. So far:

  • Obama has not withdrawn the troops from Iraq.
  • Obama has escalated the war in Afghanistan.
  • Obama has not closed Gitmo.
  • Obama never sent Congress a single-payer health care plan, such as most industrial democracies have, and he bailed out of a 'public option' option early.
  • Obama has attacked reproductive rights by signing an executive order against federal funding of abortions.
  • The Obama administration has defended the homophobic DOMA from legal challenges.
  • He's done nothing to institute regulation of the derivatives market, where the current economic catastrophe began. Wall Street firms who did more harm to America than a dozen 9-11 continue to pay executives obscene bonuses, often with money borrowed from the US Treasury. There is no jobs program in the Obama administration's recover plans — just shoveling more money into the same institutions that got us into this mess.

Obama is Bush's third term.

PHP MySQL Forms

20 March 2010

Once the WordPress pages are flattened to static by HTTRACK, if you don't want everything to be all in one directory, you have to change the filenames. Instead of doing this with many lines of sed, I thought I would put the filename translations in a table.

So I have spent the last couple of days refreshing my knowledge of forms so I don't have to build the table with the MySQL client. The add-to-table form and table display now works pretty good.

I was going to build tables for the guided tours and the prev and next LINKs. I'll get around to it.

What went wrong

20 March 2010

Since I was young, a cup of coffee has shrunk to 5 oz. and a beer has grown to 24 oz.  I think that explains a lot.

March 17 in Wilma’s World

17 March 2010

When a beagle's nose is flapping,
The world's a smelly place,
Because a beagle's nose is all
there is to a beagle's face.

When a beagle sniffs a cat turd
The world's a great delight.
A beagle loves to sniff stuff
When the moon is high at night.

But when a beagle's feeling peckish
She'll bay for a wee snack
Maybe that's the reason
The shelter won't take her back.

Q. What did Sarah Palin do that Obama couldn’t do?

15 October 2008

My ballot
Holding my nose.

A. Got me to vote for Obama.

Once February Obama turned into July Obama, I couldn't find any good reason to vote for either candidate. Read the whole entry.

Obama: The Deal Breaker

4 July 2008

US Senate photo of Barack Obama

I have voted for the full Democratic ticket in every general election since 1972, when I was first eligible to vote in a general election. While I was physically able, I attended my Democratic precinct caucus and several times I was selected to go on to my county Democratic convention. Read the whole entry.

A Word to Young Texans from Lars Eighner,
Author of Travels with Lizbeth

If you are old enough to vote, by now you know that it is rare and difficult for one person to make a real difference in the world, no matter how just his or her cause, no matter how passionate he or she may be, no matter how hard that person works. Read the whole entry.
