
Jean Andrews was born (c. 1923) and raised in the Kingsville area. She attended what is now Texas A&M University at Kingsville and was graduated from the University of Texas with a BS in Home Economics in 1944. She earned a masters in education from Texas A&M University at Kingsville in education and PhD in Art from the University of North Texas in 1976.
Although her works on peppers have brought her international renown as "The Pepper Lady," her life-long interest in textile arts have produced a remarkable collection of folk art from around the world including more than 1500 artifacts and her interest in natural science have resulted in field guides to wildflowers and sea shells.
Her works include: Shells and Shores of Texas, Peppers: the Domesticated Capsicums [new edition], The Texas Bluebonnet, Texas Monthly Field Guide to the Shells of Texas, An American Wildflower Florilegium, A Field Guide: Shells of the Florida Coast, The Pepper Lady's Pocket Pepper Primer, and The Pepper Trail: History and Recipes from Around the World.
