
Francis Edward "Ab" Abernethy was born in Altus, Oklahoma. He is Regents Professor Emeritus of English at Stephen F. Austin State University. He is among the founders of the Texas Folklife Festival at the Institute of Texas Cultures in San Antonio. In 1971 he became the Secretary-Editor of the Texas Folklore Society which then moved to Nacagdoches. In this position, he edited more than a score of the society's publications.
